On Friday, April 5th, Diane von Furstenberg and Tina Brown hosted The DVF Awards at the United Nations in New York City. The event honored five inspirational women who have demonstrated leadership, strength and courage in their respective fields. All honorees received $50,000 from The Diller–von Furstenberg Family Foundation in support of their organization to sustain and expand their extraordinary efforts. The fourth annual event closed the Women in the World Summit.
Author and activist, Gloria Steinem, introduced Vital Voices Global Partnership honoree Sunitha Krishnan from the organization Prajwala – a group that rescues women and children from brothels and provides quality education to the children of prostitutes.
Actress Olivia Wilde introduced another Vital Voices Global Partnership honoree, Andeisha Farid, from AFCECO (the Afghan Child Education and Caring Organization) – an organization that provides children with a safe and nurturing environment while instilling important leadership values of tolerance and an appreciation of education in Afghanistan’s future generations.
Gayle King, co-anchor of “CBS This Morning” and editor-at-large for O, The Oprah Magazine, introduced Lifetime Leadership Award honoree Robin Roberts. Ms. Roberts has shown extraordinary grace and courage in her ability to overcome breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a rare blood disorder. She exemplifies the characteristics closest to the heart of Ms. von Furstenberg, dedicating her life and body of work to instilling leadership and strength within other women.
U.S. Women’s Gymnast and gold medal winner,
Gabrielle Douglas, introduced People’s Voice winner Tammy Tibbetts. Tibbetts was chosen by popular vote from a select number of nominees doing significant work on behalf of women’s causes. She is the president and founder of She’s the First, an organization that sponsors girls’ education and encourages them to be the first in their families to graduate from school.
The final award of the night was presented by Diane von Furstenberg to Inspiration Award honoree, supermodel and philanthropist, Natalia Vodianova. Vodianova is the founder and president of the Naked Heart Foundation, a charitable organization that strives to provide a safe and inspiring environment for every child living in Russia.
English singer-songwriter, Paloma Faith, provided the musical entertainment for the evening with DJ Harley Viera Newton spinning throughout the evening.
