The exhibition is divided into four chapters: INTEGRAL FILM, PEEL APART FILM, POSITIVE/NEGATIVE FILM and INSTANT SLIDE FILM. The pictures are displayed in the context of the different camera- and film-types, up to the fascinating large formats of 50 x 60 cm.
Polaroids in all sizes are shown from artists such as Ansel Adams, Nobuyoshi Araki, Robert Mapplethorpe, Stephen Shore, Ralph Gibson, Helmut Newton or Oliviero Toscani`s famous polaroid of Andy Warhol with his Polaroid-camera.
The Polaroid Collection was curated by Rebekka Reuter, curator-in-chief of WestLicht in Vienna.
The exhibition can be viewed from may 26th until august 5th 2012 at NRW-Forum, Düsseldorf.
What do you think about the polaroid and its disappearance?
Is (or was) it a suitable medium / canvas for art?
I think it depends on hwo define "suitable medium for art". Everything can be a medium for art, especially as it is very subjective what you consider to be art. I don't think that the disappearance of polaroids is a great loss for humanity just like the disappearance of horse carriages for public transport wasn't. ;)
