Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz are primed for battle in 'Oz The Great and the Powerful' wearing dazzling costumes embellished with thousands of Swarovski crystals.
As Good Witch Glinda, Williams sparkles in white as she confronts the wicked ruler of the Emerald City, Evanora, played by a darkly shimmering Weisz, in director Sam Raimi’s magical tale, which tells how dubious small-time magician Oscar Diggs from Kansas became the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz before Dorothy’s arrival from dusty Kansas.
Creating the fantastical world of Oz The Great and the Powerful was a dream project for costume designers Gary Jones and Michael Kutsche (Alice in Wonderland), the creative wizards behind the imaginative outfits that compliment the Land of Oz created by production designer Robert Stromberg.
Over 260,000 Swarovski crystals were used to add depth and enchantment to Oz’s majestic throne in Emerald City and to the costumes and jewellery of the witches.
I saw the movie last week and was very disappointed. Honestly I didn't like the costumes very much. Glinda's crown seemed big and heavy on such an ethereal actress, and the push up bodice on the wicked witch was strangely out of place. Evanoras original emerald green costume was the prettiest, but even it was ruined by heavy black leggings underneath. The best costumes were on the circus performers in Kansas!
